We live in a world in which the course of things can change so profoundly and abruptly that we find ourselves unable to imagine any concrete future. Faced by this uncertainty, society turns toward the world of appearances and spectacle, a world that constructs its own fictions of past, present, and future. I am interested in using painting as a tool to sift through the artifacts of this image culture in search for pattern. From the culturally recognized conventions of art historical genres to the abstract languages of cartography and digital culture, my paintings attempt to build meaning from dissonant sources. The search for meaning in the sea of our cultural images represents a necessary challenge in our efforts to draw an intelligible pattern from complexity.
